Carved entirely on a single piece of wood, this wood panel will be sure to add accent to your exotic home decoration. Mermaid stories are widely told and shared, and almost know no geographical boundaries. The mermaid story first appeared in Assyria, a region on the Upper Tigris river, named for its original capital, the city of Asshur (or Ashshur) around 1000 BC. The story started with Atargatis, the mother of legendary Assyrian queen Semiramis, was a goddess who loved a mortal shepherd and in the process killed him. Ashamed, she jumped into a lake to take the form of a fish, but the waters would not conceal her divine nature. Thereafter, she took the form of a mermaid - human above the waist, fish below, though the earliest representations of Atargatis showed her as being a fish with a human head and legs, similar to the Babylonian Ea, precursor of the Biblical Noah. The Greeks recognized Atargatis under the name Derketo, where she was often conflated with Aphrodite. This one of a kind wood carving captures the beauty and the ever lasting story about mermaids. In this depiction, she floats and swims elegantly around some flowers and underwater plants while being accompanied by 3 fishes. The carving quality is absolutely gorgeous.
