2 Hand Painted/Lacquer Wood Vases (Pair) - Rise
Size: 8" x 4"
A pair of finely crafted wooden vases will be certain to complement your decoration needs. Strong and sturdy, these vases can hold decorative flowers, glass ornaments, bamboo accessories, metal crafts and many more. Each vase is uniquely hand painted before it is sealed with at least 2 layers of lacquer. Lacquer is made from the sap of a tree and its application is an incredibly involved process involving at least 10 separate steps. The artisan first carves the vases from selected wood and is then coated with a mixture of lacquer and ash. Lacquer is naturally black, so pigments such as ochre and indigo are added to create color. The piece is put in a cellar for up to a week to dry, then smoothed with a pumice stone and allowed to sit in the sun to remove excess moisture. The cycle of lacquer application, drying and sanding is repeated at least twice for these vases until the lacquer has been built up sufficiently and the design is achieved. The piece is then rubbed with sesame oil and polished to a high brilliance finish. The painting on these vases depict 2 cranes flying through a scenic sun set backdrop. In some Asian countries, legend holds that the crane lives for a thousand years. In Japanese, Chinese and Korean tradition, cranes stand for peace and long life. Folded white paper origami cranes are often placed at memorial parks to symbolize peace. Folded paper cranes are also given to ill people to wish them a quick recovery. It is said that 1000 folded paper origami cranes makes a wish come true.
