This is an exquisite hand-carved wooden Goddess Quan Yin Buddha statue. This sculpture depicts a meditating Goddess Quan Yin Buddha, seated on top of lotus blossom. Her right hand is position to a mudra chant while holding a vase that houses the water of immortality on her left. Goddess Quan Yin is also commonly known as the Goddess of Mercy, is a bodhisattva, one who is qualified to enter nirvana, but chose to remain on earth to bring all to enlightenment. She is the embodiment of compassionate loving kindness. As the Bodhisattva of Compassion, She hears the cries of all beings. Statues of her stand in many Buddhist temples, and a woman who wants a child may pray to her. This masterpiece is carved entirely from a single block of highly prized crocodile wood to maintain the sculpture's integrity and quality. Crocodile wood is naturally white and dense.
This magnificent sculpture was first carved, fine and smooth polished to its natural white wood appearance. The grains are visible and extremely attractive which adds depth to this masterpiece. After further drying, a dedicated painter (supposedly, only a handful of such artists can do such detail paintings in the whole of Bali) painted a peaceful scene with colorful flowers, birds, cranes, waterfall etc through Buddha's robe using acrylic paint. Further drying followed. Finally, a layer of clear lacquer was applied to the final work to give it a clear shiny protection coating. This has to be done when the paintings are absolutely dry to avoid any smearing. After the lacquer applications, the sculpture was let to dry for at least another week. All in all, the process to create this magnificent piece takes more than 8 weeks.
Goddess Quan Yin's facial expression says it all - calmingly gentle, peaceful and tranquil. It's believed that by placing a Quan Yin artifact will bless you with much joy, happiness and peace.
