Descriptions:
Quan Yin, sometimes called the Goddess of Mercy, is actually more like the Buddhist equivalent of the Madonna. She is a bodhisattva, one who is qualified to enter nirvana, but chose to remain on earth to bring all to enlightenment. She is the embodiment of compassionate loving kindness. As the Bodhisattva of Compassion, She hears the cries of all beings. Statues of her stand in many Buddhist temples, and a woman who wants a child may pray to her. Often Quan Yin is shown pouring a stream of healing water, the "Water of Life," from a small vase. With this water devotees and all living things are blessed with physical and spiritual peace. She also holds a sheaf of ripe rice or a bowl of rice seed as a metaphor for fertility and sustenance. The dragon, an ancient symbol for high spirituality, wisdom, strength, and divine powers of transformation, is a common motif found in combination with the Goddess of Mercy. In this beautiful wood carving, Quan Yin sits on a lotus blossom deep in meditation while holding a scripture in her left hand. The final finish is dyed black and polished to a smooth glossy surface. Gold paint lines most edges which gives it a brilliant distinction and depth.
